Dr. Leland J. Wise Jr graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts degree (1967) in Physical Education and was thereafter teaching and coaching at Decorah Junior High School and LaSalle High School in Cedar Rapids. Leland  served as a graduate assistant (1969-1970) at UNI while earning a Master of Arts degree (1970) in Physical Education, thereafter joining Eastern Iowa Community College as an instructor and wrestling and baseball coach. Dr. Wise Jr taught physical education for Cedar Rapids Schools, was a Principal for both Cal Community Schools and for Marion, Iowa. Leland served as an educational consultant Northern Trails AEA 2, while earning a Doctor of Philosophy degree (1978) in Educational Administration from the University of Iowa. He completed post doctorate work at the College of William and Mary, Wright State University, University of Iowa and Iowa State University. Leland served as superintendent of schools for the Benton Community and Norway School Districts, (1983-1989) thereafter serving as assistant superintendent for the Park Hill School District in Kansas City, Missouri.  

Dr. Wise Jr was superintendent of schools in Council Bluffs (1990-1994), Bellefontaine, OH (1994-1996), Monona, IA (1996-2001) and Dinwiddie, VA (2001-2004). the Iowa DPI Superintendents Advisory Council, the IHSAA Board of Control, and as an Iowa State High School and NCAA National Wrestling Tournament official. Dr.Wise Jr served as a superintendent for 21 years and was named Superintendent of the Year (2005), Virginia Region 1 Association of School Superintendents, listed in Who’s Who in American Education and named Scholar-In-Residence Recipient, Institute for School Executives, University of Iowa; Dr. Leland J. Wise Jr was a varsity letter winner in Wrestling (1963-1965) and was selected to the Cedar Rapids Softball Hall of Fame (1994).
