Connie J. Shafar graduated (1969) from the University of Northern Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education, thereafter earning (1991) a Master of Science degree from Western Illinois University. 

Shafar was president of the Majors Club, served on the committee to establish women's intercollegiate athletics and received the Women's Physical Education Leadership Award.

She taught/coached at Bedford (1966-1969), Hampton (1970-1973), Hudson (1974-1980) and Pleasant Valley (1981-2003) community school districts. 

Shafar received local, county, state and DPI Teacher of the Year Awards and was named Coach of the Year by the Mississippi Athletic Conference (2), Iowa Basketball Coaches, Iowa Athletic Coaches and the National High School Coaches Associations.

She has been inducted into nine local, state and national Hall of Fames, both as a player (4) and coach (5); and was one of 14 athletes to receive the prestigious First Lady Award by the IGHSAU. 

Shafar served (1991-2018) on the Institute of Character Development Task Force and Winning With Honor for Drake University and has supervised student teachers for University of Iowa (2004-2018) and served (2014-2018) as adviser/mentor for the Regents Alternative Pathway to Iowa Licensure. 

Connie J. Shafar has served the profession of physical education with great distinction.
