Minorities in Leadership of Education

Miles ahead

A special initiative to support educators of color, Minorities in the Leadership of Education (MILE) helps aspiring, qualified school leaders of color build a network of support and practice while providing financial support as you seek to advance your career as an educational leader.

The financial support applies to principalship and superintendency studies, which you may also combine to work toward your doctorate. It includes two scholarship opportunities:

  • Betty J. Hyde Endowed Scholarship ($2,000)
    • Preference given to applicant from Des Moines School District
  • Marilyn Jorgensen Education Scholarship  ($1,900)

Steps to apply for these scholarships:

Contact:  Tim Gilson, Associate Professor, Educational Leadership, (319) 273-2636, or tim.gilson@uni.edu

Dr. Gilson and the MILE team helped shape the leader that I am and the program still supports me today. The MILE network is well established, always growing, and helped put me in touch with the strong network of leaders who have already walked the path of becoming an educational leader. I appreciated the personalized approach to my education and will be forever grateful for my experience at UNI and the MILE program.
