About the Department

Taking the Lead on Clinical Experience

Jim StichterWhen it comes to experience in the field, the Department of Teaching delivers.

More than 20 faculty and staff, including 23 student teaching and clinical experience coordinators and two support staff, oversee nearly 2,000 placements each year in schools from Cedar Falls to Ecuador.

Playing an integral role in Teacher Education, we ensure you learn and grow from a set of experiences that are a critical part of your preparation.

  • Full-time student teaching and clinical experience coordinators staff nine student teaching centers from border to border in addition to out-of-state and international placements.
  • As a team, they ensure your experiences fit your needs: in schools large and small, in urban, rural and suburban settings; and in classrooms reflecting the diversity of our communities.

With its roots as the Department of Training in Teaching formed in 1911, the department provides an unequalled network of relationships to the benefit of past, present and future generations of UNI teachers.

Jim Stichter, a former music educator, school administrator and 25-year UNI and College of Education faculty member with experience as a field experience coordinator and instructor, has served as the interim department head since January 2024.
