Educational background:
BA from the University of Northern Iowa in earth science and physical education and received my MSE in educational administration from Drake University. Before joining UNI, I was an elementary principal for 24 years. I began my career in education as an earth science teacher and coach for 16 years in the Iowa public school system.
Why did you choose this career path?
After working in a variety of jobs both during college and during the summer, I found my happy place was working with students.
What brought you to UNI?
UNI's reputation for producing quality teachers and the opportunity to work with a great team of educators as well as the chance to further my knowledge base while staying up to date on educational issues.
What's your favorite part about UNI?
I enjoy the meaningful conversations and the sharing of ideas between student teaching coordinators. The philosophy of “We’re Better Together!” is a foundational belief in the Department of Teaching!
What does being student focused mean to you?
Being student focused means having meaningful conversations with students, listening to what they are saying, watching what they are doing and pushing them to stretch their skills through reflective practices. Taking them where they are at and planting seeds within their mind that will help them grow and become great teachers for tomorrow's students.
We talk about helping students realize or even exceed their expectations and potential. What does it mean to you to be part of that process and see the outcome?
It means keeping up on best practice to help students by providing meaningful instruction. Providing feedback to the student teachers that challenges them to think deeper about the lessons they teach and look for ways to challenge students in engaging and useful ways. To work with student-teachers to process and set goals that they themselves can use to grow and improve their skills.
What do you hope your students learn from you?
Teaching is hard work, yet a very rewarding profession that is ever-changing and growing.
What advice do you have for prospective or current students to make the most of their time at UNI?
UNI offers a lot of opportunities to grow your skills in a practical, authentic manner. Take advantage of the different student organizations UNI has to offer!
