Purple Pathway for Paraeducators
Ashley Rodamaker
Why did you choose this degree -- and to pursue this degree at UNI?
I was a paraeducator for seven years and UNI started a program (Purple Pathway for Paraeducators) that would help me become a teacher while still being able to keep working in my position.
What kind of path did you take to achieve your degree?
I discovered my passion along the way by working in the school system. I was in accounting before working in education.
Describe your field experience and how it has prepared you for your career.
I had the pleasure of student teaching with great teachers who helped me learn what it really means to be a teacher!
What does completing your degree mean to you?
It means that I get to continue to help students love learning just as much as I do!
What challenges did you face as you worked toward this degree – and how did you overcome them?
Balancing classwork with family and working full-time as a paraeducator was challenging at times but well worth it. I got really good at setting priorities and leaning on family and friends to help out. It takes a village!
How did UNI help you achieve your goals?
UNI made it possible for me to attend school while still working and supporting my family.
We often say UNI is student focused; a place where professors care--and teach; a place where learning happens in and out of the classroom; and is perfectly sized. How do any of these statements ring true for you?
UNI is student focused because the professors always took into account that we were working while we continued our education and made sure they did everything they could so we would not feel overwhelmed with our course load. They responded to emails even late at night when we needed help.
What’s your best memory of your time at UNI?
I got to meet so many people in my cohort and we had so much fun over our Zoom classes. I looked forward to each class and seeing my peers!
What advice would you give to students considering UNI?
UNI sincerely cares about their students' successes!
Next steps?
Start teaching in my own elementary classroom in the fall.
