Julianne Gassman's Vitae

Dr. Julianne Gassman is the Director of Community Engagement at the University of Northern Iowa. In this role she thinks strategically about the interface between UNI and its community from local to global. Dr. Gassman is also a Professor in the Department of Health, Recreation, and Community Services. Dr. Gassman has taught in the area of nonprofit management for the past twenty-five years. She is the author/co-author of five books, including:

  • "Leadership Cases in Community Nonprofit Organizations"
  • "Nongovernmental Organizations Case Studies in Leadership from Around the World"
  • "Managing for Excellence: Programs of Distinction for Children and Youth"
  • "Contracting Child Care: A Case Study of the Military Child Care Act and Camp Adventure™ Youth Service"
  • "Camp Leadership: A Staff Development Approach"

Dr. Gassman has numerous publications in the area of community engagement/service-learning, nonprofit management, youth development and organizational culture in academic journals such as the Journal of Higher Education and Engagement, Journal of Nonprofit Management and Leadership, the Journal of Ideology, the International Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences, New Directions for Youth Development, Hong Kong Recreation Review and SCHOLE. She has presented nationally and internationally, including at the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA), Leisure and Recreation Association of South Africa (LARASA), Nonprofit Academic Centers Council (NACC), the Alliance Management Institute (AMI), Army Reserve Youth Leadership, Education and Development Summit in Lihue, Hawaii, and the National AfterSchool Association Conferences. Locally, Dr. Gassman has presented her work at the Iowa Nonprofit Summit, the Upper Midwest Civic Engagement Summit, and the Iowa School Age Care Alliance. She has also provided trainings for the Department of the Navy in Patuxent River Navy Air Station in Maryland and in Yokosuka and Okinawa, Japan. 

Dr. Gassman worked with Camp Adventure™ Child & Youth Services starting in 1991 serving in various roles in the U.S, Japan, Germany, and Korea. She assumed the responsibility of a project director in Europe supervising over 400 college students from 1998 through 2001 and continued to serve Camp Adventure™ until 2014.
