Academic Advisor
Highlights of work experience:
High school Spanish teacher at two different schools in Iowa, served as a graduate assistant (GA) in UNI IT Client Services and Study Abroad, held internships with the LGBT* Center (now GSS) and Dean of Students Office as well as advising at Hawkeye Community College, study abroad advisor at Illinois State University, academic/college success advisor at Hawkeye.
What attracted you to UNI and the College of Education:
I was drawn to UNI by my previous experience at UNI as a student, my graduate work experience and how welcoming and genuinely kind everyone I interacted with was. My career experience as a teacher and as an advisor who worked with education majors via study abroad advising and academic advising reinforced my interest in the College of Education at UNI. I knew this was the group of students I had the best connection with and I wanted to continue to help the field of education grow.
Describe an experience that reinforces why you enjoy what you do:
On my first day of this new job, I came across two of my former students from Hawkeye, who I had advised and helped transfer to UNI. Each of these students expressed genuine excitement and shared that they had "missed me". As cheesy as that sounds, knowing I made and continue to make an impact on my students, that they can see my genuine care and interest in their futures and well-beings, and that they want to continue working with me, is what reinforces why I enjoy what I do.
