Why this degree -- and at UNI?
I have always been inspired by teachers, and how they make a difference in the lives of their students. In my darkest days it was a teacher that helped me seek help and bounce back. I hope to be there for my students as they were for me. I chose UNI both because they had a program that would let me work as a full-time paraprofessional at College Community School District, but also because my father graduated from UNI.
What kind of path did you take to achieve your degree?
Since joining UNI I have had no doubts this is the path I wanted. I have a degree already in science and in history. But teaching brings about a dedication and happiness I didn't think I could find.
Describe your field experience and how it has prepared you for your career.
My student teaching has given me amazing insights about the day-to-day lives and expectations of teachers. It has shed light on my future profession and has given me priceless experience, lessons and wisdom that I can carry into the future.
What does completing your degree mean to you?
It is only the beginning of the next chapter. I plan on using my degree to the fullest and applying for positions immediately. One day I will return to progress my education beyond the bachelor's, but I do not know when that will be.
What challenges did you face as you worked toward this degree – and how did you overcome them?
Trying to juggle classwork and a full-time job was challenging, but, with the help of my co-workers, my family and my professors, it all worked out, and I am overjoyed that it did.
How did UNI help you achieve your goals?
I knew the path I wanted to take, I could see the door I hoped for, the dream that I had. UNI granted me the key needed to open that door and clear the path for my dream.
We often say UNI is student focused; a place where professors care--and teach; a place where learning happens in and out of the classroom; and perfectly sized. How do any of these statements ring true for you?
1. It is student focused because the staff has always done what they can to help me and have gone out of there way to assist, even when my questions were simple and a result of me overreacting! 2. Never have a felt like a professor didn't care, they have always been willing to work with us and answer questions/concerns in a timely manner. 3. Being a distant learner (online classes), I can say without a shadow of a doubt that learning happens both in the calls and out of the calls. Furthermore, some of my best experiences and learning growths were when I was studying or reading the assignments. The amount of "eureka!" moments are hard to count.
What’s your best memory of your time at UNI?
Getting to see my fellow student teachers during our Zoom calls. All of those working to reach their dreams working together was not only fun, but a memory I will remember.
What advice would you give to students considering UNI?
Remember, even if the path you think is the one you want to walk, do not lose heart if you lose your way. There will always be a new path, a new door waiting to be opened. Believe in yourself and press forward, there is always a brighter future, if you are willing to work for it.
What's next?
Get a job! Can't wait and super excited/nervous!
