Endorsement 260 K-8 Instructional Strategist I: Mild/Moderate

 

Students who hold or will be holding an Early Childhood, Elementary, or Secondary teaching certificate may receive the K-8 Instructional Strategist I: Mild/Moderate Endorsement by satisfactorily completing the following program from the University of Northern Iowa.

 

SPED 3150  Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners in Classrooms, 2 Hours  (Fall/Spring)

 

SPED 4150  Introduction to Special Education: Legal, Advocacy, and Assistive Technology Practices and Issues, 3 Hours  (Fall/Spring)

 

SPED 4151 Educational and Post-School Transition Programming for Individuals with Disabilities, 3 Hours (Fall/Spring)

 

Foundations Block:

SPED 4161  Educational Management in Special Education, 3 Hours  (Fall/Spring)

SPED 4162  Specialized Assessment and Instruction for Students with Disabilities, 3 Hours  (Fall/Spring)

SPED 4163  Experience in Special Education, K-8, 3 Hours  (Fall/Spring)

 

Differentiation Block:

SPED 4171  Creating and Sustaining Positive Inclusive Learning Environments, K-12, 3 Hours  (Fall/Spring)

SPED 4172   Differentiated & Intensive Methods in Literacy & Mathematics:  Elementary Mild/Moderate, K-8, 3 Hours  (Fall/Spring)

*Post Baccalaureate students holding a Teaching Certificate may fulfill the student teaching requirement through completion of a university supervised SPED 6290 Experience in Special Education (Mild/Moderate Disabilities, K-6; 3 hours) in an approved setting.

Students taking courses for graduate credit should register for the above courses but with a “5” prefix (e.g., SPED 5151, SPED 5161, etc.)


 

Course Descriptions

 

SPED 3150  Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners in Classrooms (2 hours)

Introduction to pedagogical, curricular, and social considerations involved in educating diverse learners in the general education classroom.

 

SPED 4150  Introduction to Special Education: Legal, Advocacy, and Assistive Technology Practices and Issues (3 hours)

This course will explore issues in special and inclusive education with a focus on law and legal issues, assistive technology, and related educational issues centering on identification, assessment, intervention, characteristics, advocacy, and educational implications/teaching strategies for individuals with exceptional learning needs.

 

SPED 4151 Educational and Post-School Transition Programming for Individuals with Disabilities (3 hours)

This course will promote understanding of current initiatives and research related to planning and supporting educational (K-12) and post-school transitions for individuals with disabilities.

 

SPED 4161   Educational Management in Special Education (3 hours)

Individual behavior management, behavioral change strategies, and classroom management for students with special needs.

 

SPED 4162  Specialized Assessment and Instruction for Students with Disabilities (3 hours)

Collection and use of educational data to assess and teach students with diverse learning needs, educational planning and progress monitoring, instructional models, curricular access, mapping, and development.

 

SPED 4163  Experience in Special Education, K-8 (3 hours) (Foundations Block)

Supervised assessment and teaching experience in special education as listed in the Schedule of Classes.  May be repeated in different areas for up to 12 hours. 

 

SPED 4171 Creating and Sustaining Positive Inclusive Learning Environments, K-12 (3 hours)

Development of professional behaviors characterized by positive personal interactions with others and effective skills for interdisciplinary collaboration.  Strategies for collaborating with parents, administrators, teacher and paraprofessional colleagues, as well as community and support services personnel to create and sustain positive inclusive learning environments.  Students will engage in problem solving to learn small group, whole class, and school-wide management competencies required to teach and support students with disabilities, K-12.

 

SPED 4172 Differentiated & Intensive Methods in Literacy & Mathematics: Elementary Mild/Moderate (3 hours)                

Deals with pragmatic knowledge about assessment, methodologies, techniques, and technology related specifically for group instruction of K-8 students with mild/moderate disabilities.

 

SPED 4192 Experience in Special Education, Mild/Moderate Disabilities, K-8 (6 hours) (Differentiated Block)

Supervised assessment and teaching experience in special education as listed in the Schedule of Classes.  May be repeated in different areas for up to 12 hours.
