There are three one credit graduate workshops (200:133g) offered in conjunction with UNI's Professional Development School. Each meets for five sessions of 3 hours each. The first of the three introduces teachers to the field experience requirements, discusses ways to increase the engagement of field experience students, provides tips for coaching field experience students, and shows teachers how to use field experience students to individualize instruction. The second extends and expands upon those concepts addressed while additionally preparing teachers to provide leadership to other teachers who are mentoring preservice teachers. The third course requires working with a team of other teachers to teach the first mentoring course. Syllabi for these courses are available below.

Field experiences are a critical component to teacher education and expert mentoring by classroom teachers is in turn a key to quality field experiences. Ideally, the field experience offers multiple opportunities for benefit to both the preservice and mentor teacher. In an effort to support area mentor teachers, the Continuing Education department at UNI is offering three 1-credit graduate courses in mentoring preservice teachers. These courses are being offered at a reduced cost of only $50 for teachers who host UNI field experience students during the semester they take the course. Each course meets five times from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at AEA 267.

  • 200:133g: Mentoring Preservice Teachers I
    • (Spring dates: February 1 & 8, March 1 & 29, April 12) The course examines various approaches to mentoring preservice teachers and strategies to reap the greatest mutual benefit from the experience. Topics include setting expectations, instigating greater involvement and benefit from the preservice teacher, coaching and problem solving strategies, learning about the development of future teachers through each level of UNIís teacher education program, and participating in collaborative inquiry about improving the UNI program.
  • 200:133g: Mentoring Preservice Teachers II
    • (Spring dates: February 11th & 25th, April 1st, 15th,& 22nd. Mentoring themes from course I are developed further with an emphasis on developing teacher leadership skills necessary to teach these concepts to other professionals and colleagues and making formal presentations and demonstrations in university courses. [prerequisite: Mentoring I]
  • 200:133g: Mentoring Preservice Teachers III
    • (Spring dates: February 1 & 8, March 1 & 29, April 12) Mentor teachers who have completed the first two courses apply their skills by facilitating discussion, sharing their practice, and presenting in the Mentoring I course. [prerequisites: Mentoring I and II]
Register for a course at: and choose ďAll other courses.Ē The course will not appear on the list of courses because it is only open to area mentor teachers, so you need to know the course number and name to enroll.

Teacher Orientation Guides

These guides are intended to be given to field experience students during the first day they arrive in class or perhaps at your school's orientation for field experience students. Orientation guides can provide field experience students with a welcoming statement, the requirements for the field experience, an overview of your expectations as a mentoring teacher, descriptions of the classroom procedures, and your philosophy as a mentoring teacher. As you will see in the examples below, they may be as brief as one side of a page. Regardless of length, most teachers agree they are a handy tool for communicating expectations to field experience students, especially when your time for conferencing is very limited.
