Bailey Leitner, a senior at Dubuque Senior High School, has been awarded the Sally Gearhart Strottman Memorial Scholarship in Elementary Education at the University of Northern Iowa. The award is given by the UNI College of Education to an incoming freshman from Northeast Iowa who will pursue a degree in elementary education. The scholarship award is $10,000 and is renewable for a total of four years.
The future UNI elementary education student was surprised with a formal presentation of the award by Interim Dean Colleen Mulholland on January 31 at Dubuque Senior High School in Dubuque, Iowa.
“I am so very honored to have received this award and recognition. I thank you for choosing me,” said Leitner upon receiving the award.
The scholarship honors the late Sally Gearhart Strottman, a 1970 alumna of UNI’s College of Education. She was a former educator in the Waverly-Shell Rock school district.
The Strottman Memorial Scholarship looks for students who are involved in the school and the community. At Dubuque Senior, Leitner has served as a student ambassador, participates on the swimming/diving and women’s golf squads and is currently in Model UN. In the community, she has volunteered as a camp counselor at Camp Wyoming. She also works part time at the Dubuque Fareway.
The scholarship is made possible through a generous gift to the UNI Foundation.
