The UNI International Dance Theatre (IDT) Dance Company is a student based performing group sponsored by the School of Health, Physical Education, and Leisure Services at the University of Northern Iowa. The IDT began in 1957 under the name UNI Folk Dancers. The name was changed to better reflect the focus on ethnic dance forms used for theatrical purposes. It performs a varied repertoire of multicultural and ballroom dances from around the world, including the United States. Contact Mandy Masmar for additional information.
The goal of IDT Dance Company is to expose students to a variety of different dances as well as a variety of fellow students, each with varied dance and cultural experiences. International students are encourage to bring dances from their countries to share with the group. Members are also given the chance to attend conferences and workshops throughout the country to learn new dances which they can bring back to the group.
No dance experience is required to join IDT.
The UNI IDT Dance Company presents two concerts a year. In the fall the company joins with the Orchesis Dance Company in the Family Fest Concert. In the spring, IDT Dance Company produces a separate, professional dance concert. In addition to formal stage performances, the company presents numerous road shows and mini-concerts each year, and has performed throughout the Midwest, across the United States, Canada and China. In 2005, IDT, along with members from Orchesis Dance Company, presented American folk dance styles in Hong Kong.
The group is also available for school residencies which can include assembly performances as well as workshops for multicultural dance for all grade levels. For further information, to book a performance, or get information about upcoming events contact Mandy Masmar.
