A Framework for Teaching in Content Areas

For students to successfully learn subject area content, several conditions must be met. Students will learn best when they are engaged int heir own learning and attentive to content and its implications for understanding. Students are fully engaged 8in learning when they are interested and are able to sustain attention for a period of time to find the learning process rewarding. For long-term learning to occur, students must turn the action of engagement and attention into a process of cognitive processing where new information is knowingly integrated into previous  knowledge and experiences, and differences in understanding and knowledge are actively mediated. Effective instructional practice not only acknowledges this, but also purposefully works to facilitate these conditions and cognitive processes.
