As a Department of Curriculum and Instruction, we're here to prepare you to be part of a legacy. No institution prepares more teachers for Iowa than the University of Northern Iowa, and no other department prepares as many future teachers as this department.

We prepare teachers who possess the professional skills to thrive in the classroom and inspire students to learn. Our mission is to prepare caring and effective professional educators for diverse settings by linking theory, scholarship and democratic practices. Graduates of the program create their own lessons based on professional standards and work with faculty who carry a vision for the future of education. From feedback from program graduates as well as those who hire them, we know a "UNI teacher" is a world-class educator.

Careers in teaching

A teaching degree from the University of Northern Iowa is as close to a guarantee of a teaching job as you can get. Here's why:

  • Approximately 80% of our teaching graduates have found teaching positions. (Most of those who are not teaching have simply gone into a different field.)

  • Of those who are teaching, 72% are teaching in Iowa.

  • Many graduates found jobs through the All-Iowa Teacher Recruiting Fair held annually at UNI.

  • Job opportunities are great for graduates who want to teach in other states such as Texas, Florida, Arizona, or Nevada.

  • Jobs are also available overseas through the annual UNI Overseas Recruiting Fair, a premier teacher recruitment event worldwide.

Excellence in classroom involvement

Students in C&I teacher education programs learn through active involvement in their education classes. Through hands-on experiences, you gain confidence as teachers while applying best teaching practices. As 21st century future teachers, you'll find yourself immersed in actual classrooms beginning with your first professional education course and continuing through student teaching. Classroom field experiences take place in partner schools where UNI students participate in hands-on teaching experiences, apply new teaching techniques and, finally, implement your own knowledge and skills during their student teaching semester.

"The first grade student I tutored at a local school drew a picture of us reading a book together and wrote,  'Thanks for being such a good reading buddy.' That picture hangs above my desk to remind me of why I want to be a teacher." -C&I student

Excellence in faculty

Our nationally and internationally known C&I faculty members demonstrate their expertise in their teaching, research, and service. Many have served as officers and leaders in national professional organizations. Others have written articles published in highly respected journals and/or received state, national and international awards. Most importantly, their expertise serves as a foundation for your preparation, making UNI a leading choice for PreK-8 education.

Excellence in opportunities

Classes are only one part of a college education. Whether your seek a major or minor, we encourage you to become involved in the many student organizations that provide leadership opportunities and more chances for hands-on teaching. These include:

  • UNI Student Literacy Association

  • Student Association of Middle Level Educators

  • Student Elementary and Early Childhood Association

  • Kappa Delta Pi, international honor society to promote excellence in teaching

  • Alpha Upsilon Alpha, Alpha Chapter,  honor society of the International Literacy Association
